“Childhood is a time for learning about the essentials.
About the heavenly world and the earthly;
About goodness, beauty and truth…”
This is a beautiful time of the year. Spring has arrived! To me Spring time represents a time of new things, transformation and rebirth. By observing nature we see change in the gardens, flowers are blossoming and the earth is covered with beauty.
The older children in my class are looking forward to changes in their life, such as going over to primary school and having a new teacher. It has been a privilege for me to watch them as they grow spiritually, physically, emotionally and intellectually. When I observe them playing together, I have noted how well they are now handling challenges and sharing ideas. They are more independent and more creative in their indoor and outdoor playtime. The children are more fully engaged in imaginative role play. They have acted out scenarios such as weddings, doctors and nurses, pregnant mommies and more. There is much rejoicing and celebration as they welcome the birth of a new born baby.
Outside play lends itself to baking birthday cakes and cookies. In the sandpit, others build beautiful towers, castles and create rivers with bark boats floating along. Tree climbing and monkey bars are also a favourite.
When I reflect on my childhood this makes me realize how important play is. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have had a childhood that allowed me to play freely and enabled me to develop my skills in a natural environment.
The approach of the Waldorf Curriculum towards childhood development was a determining factor in my decision to become a Waldorf teacher. I saw this education as an opportunity to give the modern children in my care an environment in which they are loved, revered and have freedom in their play, which I believe is a key factor in early childhood. It has been my experience that a healthy environment creates healthy playtimes. So let us allow the children to play, play and play…
I would like to thank all my parents for allowing me to be part of their children’s journey and I would also like to thank them for their support. Lastly, I wish that all the children that have been in my class, a good experience when they go to big school.
